Scares of Mexico Overrated

Your friend tells you “I’m vacationing in Mexico”.

What is your first thought? “Oh no don’t go!” “It’s too dangerous!” “Are you crazy?”

Of course if they were going to Tijuana, Brownsville or any other “Border” town I might agree with them.

The good news is that the Mexican Riviera – also known as the “Caribbean”, is one of the safest travel get-aways you can find today. It’s close and inexpensive. Cancun is a short 2 hour flight from Dallas or one hour from Miami. The Mayan region around Cancun, Mexico still appeals to the American and European tourist as a delicious and delectable destination.

There is something for everyone: crystal clear turquoise oceans, night life, historical ruins, fishing, diving, mouth-watering cuisine, slow relaxing naps in the hammock and jungle wildlife.

Long gone are the days of worrying about drinking the water, eating raw vegetables and language barriers. For the past 10 years, Mexican tourism has strived to be US and European friendly. I’ve eaten more than my fair share of “off the street tacos”, gorgeous salads, margaritas chock full of ice and even dared to drink water straight from the tap (a forbidden action in years past). Montezuma has left me completely alone.

As for the dreaded head lopping by drug lords, the only drug related death in the Mexican Rivera was when an American Television Producer killed his wife in Cancun. It was either for drugs, money or sex. The Mexican’s love Americans and killing one would reduce tourism revenue.

The dollar is strong and buying power is fabulous. Low season is right around the corner and values on hotels, vacation homes and all inclusives is at its peak.
